Last weekend was the one we’ve all been waiting for: The CrossFit DireWolf Members’ Throwdown. Always overwhelming attendance, and 2024 was no different with 18 teams, plus judges and organisers taking over the gym last Saturday afternoon. Not to mention the Kids & Teens having their turn first.

CrossFit DireWolf Kids & Teens Throwdown

With a 9am kick-off, the first challenge for our Kids and Teens was to arrive at the gym considerably earlier than they’re used to on a Saturday!

Rowing, deadlifts, and rig work were the order of the day, with plenty of burpees thrown in for good measure, of course. A mini-sports-day done DireWolf style meant that our Throwdown started with some great energy!

Big congrat to all our young competitors for getting involved and making for a great competitions. But special shout outs go to our podium finishers:

CUBS: 1st Octavia Walker 2nd Michal Benson 3rd Amelie Nelson
KIDS: 1st Benjamin Stewart Thomas 2nd Naomi Barkan 3rd Isaac Hackett
PRETEENS: 1st Toby Hearn 2nd Jessica Hallam 3rd Eva Citra
TEENS: 1st Mathania Benson 2nd Braedyn Kennedy 3rd Micaiah Benson
ATTENDANCE AWARDS: Elodie Camp & Braedyn Kennedy

Then it was the Big Kids’ Turn!

Our first workout, “No Brakes”, saw our teams of four take to the rowers with varying distances and a varying number of burpees as a result. Finished off with 500 meters for time, it ensured Event One got everyone into Competition Mode.

Secondly, our teams were “Unhinged“ with sub-teams of two chipping away at sets of ski erg calories and double unders, with a set of four-way synchro plate groung-to-overhead after each set. A great test of engine, adaptation, and team-synergy!

The extremely aptly named “Fran-kenstein” came after lunch, and called on team tactics as well as overall skill and conditioning to navigate a barbell through 3 minute intervals of Thrusters at increasing weight with rig-work of increasing difficulty. Finishing with bar muscle ups, it was a chance for our members to show off all they’d learnt in our specialist gymnastic classes.

The final WOD, “Hit The Gas”, called for our teams to break out their running shoes and assign some ball skills – wall ball skills, that is. Max distance on the runner coupled with as many wall balls as possible finished off the day’s proceedings sweatily, and dramatically. Who doesn’t love a sprint finish!?

To go alongside our WODs, and really test the unknown and unknowable, the CFDW Grip Test was introduced with teams having to hold onto different objects for an accumulative max duration. We got out the sandbags, the plates, and the axle bar… while the fourth team member held onto the rig for dear life!

Finally, just to make sure we really left no stone unturned… The Grind Coffee House was home to a variation of Stack Cup, that turned out to bring out some of our athletes’ competitive nature more than the main events!

All For A Good Cause: In support of C-R-Y

We’re really proud of all our competitors – Kids, Cubs, Teens, and “Grown Ups” – not just for their efforts during the workouts, but also for taking on the fancy dress element with such gusto, and their kindness in volunteering to judge their fellow competitors.

Every year though, the most stand out performance at CrossFit DireWolf comes in the form of the generosity shown by our members in supporting our chosen charity: Cardiac Risk In The Young.

The reason C-R-Y means so much to us is down to our member, Chris Campbell, losing his daughter to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in 2021, and we work to raise money to finance local screening days to hopefully prevent other families having to experience such horrific trauma.
